Reading pays off at Hereford Middle
School
Eighth grader Robbie Mays enjoys reading and he particularly
enjoys the series 39 Clues. Robbie originally started the series
because the first book was written by Rick Riordan, the author
of the highly entertaining Percy Jackson series. Because of
Riordan, Robbie decided to read and participate in the new interactive
series published by Scholastic and written by such diverse and
popular authors as Riordan, Gordon Korman and Margaret Haddix
to name a few. He solved the clues in the books and then went
online where he used his clues to participate in missions, play
games, and earn more points and clues. Robbie was astounded
when he was notified that he had won third prize for Episode
7—a prize that awarded him $575.00. Notified by mail of
his prize, Robbie and his parents verified the claim through
Scholastic’s website.
Asked why he enjoys the series, Robbie responded, “I enjoy
mystery and adventure, plus it gives me an excuse to play on
the computer.” Hoping to win again, Robbie is currently
reading Book 9, Storm Warning, by Linda Sue Park—and logging
those clues.

Butterflys in the Library!
There is something special going on in the library! We have five
Painted Lady Butterfly chrysalides almost ready to hatch.
They arrived as hungry caterpillars two weeks ago and spent
a week eating a special diet. After a week they crawled up and
hung from the top of their container. Two days later, they had
each formed a chrysalis.
They were tranferred to their indoor “Butterfly Garden”
in the library and now a webcam is trained on them, waiting
to capture their emergence using
time- lapse photography.
Check back to see our new arrivals (approx. May 27th - 30th)
