GT NEWS -

I attended the GT Summer Camps for band (Goucher College) and for environmental studies (St. Mary’s College) during the summers after 7th and 8th grade. They were extremely valuable experiences during a formative time in my educational development. I am greatly saddened by Governor O’Malley’s decision to eliminate funding for the Maryland Summer Centers for Gifted and Talented Students.

The Maryland Summer Centers were established in 1966 and have continued to provide multi-disciplinary, challenging, and life-changing experiences to gifted students all over the state. The annual budget for running the 20 centers which serve approximately 1000 students each year is $450,000, a figure which has not altered much over the years. More importantly, students pay tuition to attend and financial aid is available to impoverished students. I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ATTEND HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR THE FINANCIAL AID. It was truly my only chance to experience a summer camp with students of similar ability and interests.
